3D printing has been a hot discussed topic among rapid prototyping field recently .To enable us to realize the technology development, a training lesson about 3d print was held in EbyTon prototyping factory. After this lesson, I roughly learned about the characteristics about 3d printing.

It think the reason why it’s so hot is that it changed the mode of normal machining way, it improved the working efficiency of prototyping manufacturing.
Compared with cnc , it has many advantages:

1.It works much faster than cnc ,don’t need program first ,and all products are finished at one time ;
2.For small but complicated parts (like crafts), it can print structures that cnc not able to machine. Because its principle is to print work piece one layer by one layer.
3.High precision .As the printer is easy to operate and most work are done by computer once the drawing leaded into the computer. And don’t need professional machine operator, thus avoided mistakes by human factor.
4.It almost has no material wasting.

So will 3d printing totally replace the market position of cnc ?No ,it wont .Because though those advantages over cnc presented ,3d printing still has some shortages compared with cnc :

1.3D printers cost much higher than cnc machines.An industrial 3d printer can cost as much as over several million ;
2.Materials strength not as good as block materials,and materials range for 3d printing is still limited;
3.It has limitation on the size as well ,for big and relatively simple parts not economic than cnc ;
4.It is not economic to make low volume products with 3d printing;

Above all,3D printing undoubtedly brought rapid prototyping technology to a new height, and improved the efficiency for prototype manufacturing, so it will must initiate a striking change to this industry .
